Scheduled Task: Auto Create Directed Replenishment Move Tasks

Distributor WMS guide to the scheduled task that pre-builds Directed Replenishment move tasks in Encompass, and why tasks may not build (Dynamic Pick, Pre-Generate Tasks off). Requires v26.07+.

Minimum Version Required: 26.07

Pre-Conditions

  • A WMS Replenish Plan must exist for the location, and it must not have Dynamic Pick turned on. Dynamic Pick plans build their own tasks in real time and are never touched by this scheduled task.

  • The plan's Pre-Generate Tasks option must be turned on. If it's off, this scheduled task skips the plan entirely, and tasks are only created when a picker presses Begin in Directed Replenishment.

  • If the plan uses a Start Time / End Time window, the scheduled task's run time must fall inside that window (checked in the location's own time zone).

  • The plan must have at least one WMS Replenish Rule configured, since these rules define which bins are considered low and what they should be replenished to.

Steps

How the AutoCreate_DirectedReplenishmentMoveTasks Scheduled Task Works

This task runs automatically in the background on a schedule (visible in the system scheduler as AutoCreate_DirectedReplenishmentMoveTasks). It doesn't require anyone to be logged in — it pre-builds replenishment work so Move Tasks are already waiting in Directed Replenishment when warehouse staff start their shift.

  1. For every location, it looks at each WMS Replenish Plan and keeps only the plans that have Dynamic Pick turned off, have Pre-Generate Tasks turned on, and are currently inside their Start Time / End Time window (if one is set).

  2. For each of those plans, it compares current bin inventory against the plan's WMS Replenish Rules to find products that have fallen below their target — whether that target is Replenish to Order, a target days of inventory, or Replenish to Capacity.

  3. It skips any product that already has an active, unexpired Move Task in progress, so it won't create duplicate work for something already queued.

  4. For everything left, it calculates how much product needs to move from the backstock (From Bin) to the pick slot (To Bin), respecting the plan's Move Unit (Case, Layer, or Pallet) and the To Bin's remaining capacity so it never asks staff to overfill a bin.

  5. It groups the needed moves into pallet-sized batches — splitting a large replenishment need across multiple Move Tasks when it won't fit on one pallet — and orders them using the plan's Sort Method (by To Bin, From Bin, or quantity needed).

  6. It creates the resulting WMS Move Tasks (Move Type: Replenish), which then appear in Directed Replenishment ready for staff to pick up — no one needs to press Begin for these to exist.

Fields And Definitions

  • Pre-Generate Tasks - Controls whether this scheduled task is allowed to build Move Tasks for the plan ahead of time. When off, the plan's Move Tasks are only created on demand when a user presses Begin in Directed Replenishment.

  • Dynamic Pick - Marks a plan as building Move Tasks in real time as a picker needs them, instead of in a scheduled batch. Plans marked this way are always excluded from this scheduled task.

  • Start Time / End Time - The daily window, in the location's local time, during which this scheduled task is allowed to build tasks for the plan. Outside that window, the plan is skipped until the next scheduled run.

  • Priority - The order in which plans are processed when several are ready to run at the same time. Lower numbers are processed first.

  • Move Unit - Whether product for this plan is moved by Case, Layer, or Pallet.

  • Sort Method - Determines the order individual bin moves are queued within a Move Task: by To Bin location, From Bin location, or by quantity needed.

Best Practices

  • Only turn on Pre-Generate Tasks for plans you want pre-built automatically before a shift starts. Leave it off for plans where staff should request tasks one at a time with Begin.

  • Set the Start Time / End Time window to line up with when staff actually need tasks ready — for example, ending shortly before a shift starts, so inventory levels used are as current as possible.

  • If a location's tasks aren't building overnight as expected, check that the plan isn't marked Dynamic Pick — those plans are always skipped by this scheduled task — and confirm Pre-Generate Tasks is turned on.

  • Use Priority to control which plans get processed first when multiple plans are eligible at the same time, especially at busy locations with several replenishment plans.
