What the Check Expired WMS Tasks Scheduled Task Does

This is a background process that runs automatically on the schedule set in the system's task scheduler. It doesn't require any action from users, and there's no screen to open or button to click — it simply keeps warehouse tasks from sitting open indefinitely. Each time it runs, it does the following:

  1. Reviews all open WMS Move Tasks (pick, put-away, replenishment, and transfer tasks) and marks a task Expired once it has gone untouched longer than the system's configured timeout period, as long as no product has actually started moving on it yet.

  2. Leaves Dynamic Pick tasks alone — this task type is excluded from automatic expiration.

  3. For move tasks generated from a Replenishment Plan that has a defined working window (a start and end time), waits until that day's window has closed before expiring the task, so a task isn't cut off in the middle of an active shift.

  4. Reviews open Bin Count Tasks (physical inventory counts) and marks them Expired once they've gone untouched past the timeout period.

  5. Creates that day's Directed Inventory Count tasks for any active WMS Inventory Count Plans scheduled for the current day of the week, provided there's inventory to count and a task hasn't already been created for that plan today.

Best Practices

  • If tasks are expiring sooner or later than expected, the timeout window is controlled by a single system-wide setting (in minutes) — contact support if it needs adjusting.

  • An Expired status isn't an error. It just means the task sat inactive past the timeout without being started — expired Move Tasks and Bin Count Tasks can typically be recreated or reassigned.

  • Because this same task also generates each day's Directed Inventory Count tasks, if an expected count doesn't appear, check the related WMS Inventory Count Plan's day/time settings and confirm there's inventory available to count.
