Auto Forecast

Explains Auto Forecast in Encompass Forecasting: why a product ignores its Forecast Group's Forecast Method (api?AutoForecast in audit) and how variance picks the Average or Trend method. Requires v21.01+.

Pre-Conditions

  • Leveraging the Forecasting tool and using Forecast Groups.

Steps

You might notice the Forecasting tool using a different Forecast Method for a particular Forecast Group. This is likely due to Auto-Forecast. If you audit the Inventory record, you'll may see "api?AutoForecast," which indicates an API is running specific logic to determine the forecast for each product in that group.

When this happens, the product isn't using the Forecast Method defined for its Forecast Group. Instead, it's relying on Auto-Forecast logic, which the system applies based on specific parameters. Here's how it works:

Step 1: Check if Variance is over 5% by comparing the last three weeks forecast sales to the last three weeks actual sales.

  • Last 3 weeks(SUM(Week(-1, -2, -3) forecast sales) - SUM(Week(-1,-2,-3) actual sales) / SUM(Week(-1, -2, -3) forecast sales) ) > 5%, Auto match Forecast Method is triggered, please see the previous task detail.

Step 2: If Step 1 is True, get percentdifference for:

  • 2.1. Last 3 weeks vs. Prev 6 Week (Average, 6 Weeks)

  • 2.2. Last 3 weeks vs. Prev 12 Week(Average, 12 Weeks)

  • 2.3. Last 3 weeks vs. Last year 6 Week(Trend, 6 Weeks)

  • 2.4. Last 3 weeks vs. Last year 12 Week(Trend, 12 Weeks)

  • 2.5. Last 3 weeks vs. Prev 6 Week with backorder (Average, 6 Weeks)

  • 2.6. Last 3 weeks vs. Prev 12 Weekwith backorder(Average,12 Weeks)

  • 2.7. Last 3 weeks vs. Last year 6 Weekwith backorder(Trend, 6 Weeks)

  • 2.8. Last 3 weeks vs. Last year 12 Week with backorder(Trend, 12 Weeks)

Step 3: Pick the calculation with the minimum absolute percent diff

Step 4:Set the Forecast Method and Forecast Percent based on the lowest percent difference.

Other Rules:

  • ExcludeBackorder = True or False, but do not change ExcludeBackorder after Forecast Method is changed.

  • If Forecast Method or Sales Period By Week is changed, then change ForecastPercent to Null.

  • If Forecast Method and Sales Period By Week do not change, then ForecastPercent is not changed.

  • For Forecast Method = Trend, only use it when Last Year has Sales.

  • First 6 weeks of the year, if there was a Sale in Last Year, we will use the Forecast Method = Trend

  • For ExcludeBackorder = False, still use NumUnits + Backorder + Backfill

(Notes: Backfill is a negative value)
