Overview

Email suppression lists are an important part of our email delivery system that helps maintain our sending reputation and ensures compliance with email best practices. This article explains what suppression lists are, and why email addresses get added to them.

What is an Email Suppression List?

A suppression list contains email addresses that our system will not send emails to. These addresses are automatically added to this list when certain conditions are met, helping to protect our email sender reputation.

Email addresses are added to our suppression lists for two primary reasons:

  1. Marked as SPAM - The recipient has explicitly marked our communications as spam

  2. Invalid Email (Bounced) - The email address is not valid, resulting in a bounce

You can verify the specific reason an email was rejected by checking the messages table, where the rejected message will indicate the failure reason.

Impact of Suppression Lists

When an email address is on a suppression list:

  • Encompass will not attempt to deliver emails to that address

  • This helps maintain our overall email deliverability and sender reputation

  • It ensures compliance with email sending best practices

What This Means for You

If you're not receiving expected emails from the system, your email address might be on the suppression list. This could happen if:

  • Your email account previously didn't exist or was full

  • You or someone with access to your email account marked our messages as spam

  • Your email server previously rejected our messages

Best Practices

  • Prioritize maintaining a good sender reputation by not over expanding your recipient list

  • Consider alternative communication methods for contacts who have marked emails as spam
