How to Calculate a Bin\u0027s Case Capacity

Warehouse manager steps for calculating bin Case Capacity: set up Bin Types (pallet capacity, dimensions or manual), assign them to Bins, and run Update_Inventories_Properties. Needs BinEdit permission; v19.01+.

Steps

The Case Capacity of a Bin is calculated using the Bin Type assigned to a Bin. This article reviews the Bin Type configuration process and related data for calculating Case Capacity.

  1. Create or Manage Bin Types

    • Navigate to the Bin Types table via Universal Search.

    • For each physically unique kind of bin found in the warehouse, create a Bin Type record and fill in the appropriate fields:

      • Name the Bin Type something recognizable, like "2 Pallet," "Flow Rack," or "Manual Capacity" for example.

      • Pallet Capacity: Enter the number of full pallets that can fit in the bin. This may be "0" for bins that do not fit a full pallet.

      • Dimensions: Enter the Height, Width, and Length of the bin using the same unit of measurement as product case dimensions. These fields may be set as "0" for Bin Types where Pallet Capacity will be used.

      • All fields may be set to "0" if manual Case Capacity entry is preferred for relevant bins.

  2. Assign Bin Types to Bins

    • Navigate to the Bins table.

    • Filter to the desired set of Bins.

    • For each Bin, assign a Bin Type:

      • Click the "Bin Type" column header and select "Column Edit" to assign Bin Types in bulk.

      • Click the edit icon next to each Bin to assign Bin Types individually.

    • Once all Bins have beed assigned a Bin Type, make sure changes have been saved. The "Case Capacity" field will not update immediately.

  3. Trigger "Case Capacity" calculation

    • Navitage to the Scheduled Tasks table, and filter to the "Update_Inventories_Properties" Scheduled Task.

    • Execute "Update_Inventories_Properties" to calculate and update the Case Capacity for each bin.

    • This task can be run manually at any time, but it will be run automatically overnight.

  4. Verify and Adjust

    • After the scheduled task has run, verify that the Case Capacity field for each bin has been updated correctly.

    • Make any necessary adjustments directly in the Bins table for bins with manual case capacity settings.

Fields And Definitions

  • The BinEdit permission is needed to make changes to the Bin Types and Bins tables.

Best Practices

Understanding Case Capacity Calculation

  • Using Dimensions: If Height, Width, and Length are specified in the Bin Type of a given Bin, the system will compare these dimensions with the product's case dimensions to calculate the bin's case capacity.

    • Bin Type Dimensions: Height = 24, Width = 18, Length = 96. Bin Type Volume = 41472.

    • Product Case Dimensions: Height = 12, Width = 18, Length = 12. Product Case Volue = 2592.

    • Bin Case Capacity = 41472/2592 = 16 Cases.

  • Using Pallet Capacity: If only the pallet capacity is specified in the Bin Type of a given Bin, the system will multiply this number by the product's cases per pallet to determine the bin's case capacity.

    • Bin Type Pallet Capacity = 10.

    • Product Cases Per Pallet = 100.

    • Bin Case Capacity = 10 * 100 = 1000 Cases.

  • Manual Case Capacity: If Height, Width, Length, and Pallet Capacity are all set to 0, the bin's case capacity must be entered manually by the warehouse manager or another high-permission team member. The system will not automatically calculate bin case capacities based on the assigned product with this method.

    • Bin record is edited to have Bin Type = Manual Capacity, and Case Capacity = 12.

    • Bin Case Capacity = 12 Cases.

    • This calculation method is typically used for flow racks that are regularly re-slotted to have new products assigned.
