Minimum Version Required: 23.12

Pre-Conditions

  • The purpose of License Plates is to uniquely label and track individual pallets as they move through a warehouse.

  • License plates make it easier to control individual pallet configurations, and communicate the need for specific pallet configurations within other warehouse processes like picking.

  • License Plate tracking should not be adopted unless pallet-level inventory or configurations are needed during the picking process. For example, pre-stacking CHEP pallets in a different configuration for club store picking. Other use cases for License Plates include hardware integrations that require pallet-level data, such as importing inventory into an ASRS system.

  • For all other granular inventory tracking needs, Bin Lots are recommended. Please visit the Bin Lots Help Resource for more information.

Steps

How to Turn on License Plate Tracking

1. Using the Universal Search, navigate to the Locations table.

2. Identify the desired location, if multiple locations exist, then arrow into the record.

3. Under the "Warehouse & Bins" subheader, Set "License Plates By Pallet" to True.

4. Click the "Save" icon.

5. Repeat steps 2-4 for any additional locations.

6. Using the Universal Search, navigate to the Bin Zones table.

7. Locate the Bin Zone used for receiving shipments, typically named ‘Receive’ or ‘Receiving’.

8. Arrow into the Bin Zone record.

9. Set "Track License Plates" to '1) Always: Transactional License Plates' or '2) Optional: FIFO License Plates'.

  • 1) Always: Transactional License Plates will force a user to scan a license plate every single time inventory in the related bin zone is interacted with, meaning that the physical pallet tags will need to be easily accessible to scan.

  • 2) Optional: FIFO License Plates will allow a user to scan a license plate when they have access to the related barcode, but will still allow for inventory interaction without scanning. For instances when inventory actions are taken without scanning, the system will use FIFO/FEFO logic to rotate inventory most logically concerning expiration dates.

10. Click the "Save" icon.

11. Repeat steps 8-10 for any additional bin zones that should track license plates, such as backstock bin zones.

Fields And Definitions

2) Optional: FIFO License Plates value in the Track License Plates field:

  • Refers to system-managed inventory rotation when a user does not provide a date via scan or selection. Though the value says "FIFO," this can also refer to FEFO rotation and is based on System Setting 372.

  • Receive Date/FIFO - First In First Out, denoting inventory rotation based on the receive date.

  • Expiration Date/FEFO - First Expires First Out, denoting inventory rotation based on expiration date.

Best Practices

  • Scan license plates whenever possible, even in scanning-optional bin zones.

  • Double-check pallet configurations as inventory is counted and moved.

  • Require license plates in more pallet-regulated zones like backstock, and set pick zones as optional for continued tracking that doesn’t rely on the ability to scan.

  • Scan license plates during ePick to confirm the pick, and assign accurate date/batch information if confirming by pallet tag.

  • Supplier pallet tags can be used as license plates at any time by filling in the Pallet Tag field on a license plate record.

  • When reviewing the license plates table, search by the SSCC18 or Pallet Tag fields instead of License Plate ID.
