Steps

The Universal Product Code (UPC or UPC code) is a barcode symbology that is widely used worldwide for tracking trade items in stores.

Resources for general learning on the UPC standard:

Encompass supports the entry of the following UPC formats in the UPC fields in the system:

  • UPC-A, commonly called just UPC, also known as GTIN-12

  • UPC-E, also known as GTIN-8, or a compressed UPC, can be 7 digits as well

  • EAN-13, also known as GTIN-13, or just EAN

When a UPC value is entered into Encompass, the system will check that it is a valid UPC.

These checks include:

  • If length = 10, a 0 is automatically added to the beginning of the UPC, and the check-digit (last digit) is automatically calculated and added

  • If length = 11, the check-digit (last digit) is automatically calculated and added

  • If length = 12 13 or 14, the check-digit (last digit) is re-calculated to ensure it is a valid calculation for barcode scanners to be able to read

In EDI and other formats where a particular UPC format from the list above is required, the system will attempt to convert the UPC to the right format.

This is not always possible when going from a larger format to a smaller format.

For example: a UPC-E can always be converted to a UPC-A or EAN-13, but a UPC-A cannot always be compressed to a UPC-E

Best Practices

  • Encompass recommends putting the UPC-A code throughout the system, this code format tends to scan the easiest by barcode scanners.

  • Overrides for certain retailers that require their UPCs in a different format can be put on the Product Authorizations table for that chain, in the UPC Override column.
